Double Glazing Thermal and Acoustic Metrics
High-performance residential building designs in Australia demand strict energy efficiency and noise mitigation. Double-glazed architectural window profiles engineered by TS Aluminium are designed to minimize heat transfer (U-Value) and sound transmission (Rw) through optimization of gas cavity spaces and spacer designs.
Thermal Values: U-Value & SHGC
The U-Value measures the rate of non-solar heat loss/gain through a window system. Lower U-Values represent superior insulation. The Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) measures the fraction of external solar radiation admitted through a window. In Queensland's warm sub-tropical climate, residential buildings require window joinery that offers a low U-value (to prevent air-conditioned air loss) and a low SHGC (to block external solar heat radiation).
TS Aluminium's double-glazed suites combine a 12mm Argon gas cavity with Low-E glass and structural thermal break polyurethane inserts. This decreases the overall frame thermal conductivity significantly:
| Joinery Type | U-Value (W/m²·K) | SHGC Range | Acoustic Rw Rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single-Glazed Standard Aluminium | 6.2 - 6.8 | 0.65 - 0.72 | Rw 26 - 28 |
| Double Glazed (Air Cavity) | 3.2 - 3.8 | 0.45 - 0.52 | Rw 34 - 36 |
| Double Glazed (Argon + Low-E Thermal Break) | 1.8 - 2.2 | 0.28 - 0.35 | Rw 40 - 42 |
Acoustic Performance (Rw Metrics)
The Weighted Sound Reduction Index (Rw) represents the decibel (dB) reduction provided by a wall or window. A window with an Rw rating of 40 will reduce a 70dB highway traffic noise level to 30dB inside the living area.
Standard double glazing using identical glass thickness on both sides (e.g. 4mm glass - 12mm space - 4mm glass) is prone to a resonance bypass frequency where sound waves cause both panes to vibrate in unison, lowering sound insulation. TS Aluminium avoids this by engineering asymmetric glass thicknesses (e.g. 6mm outer pane - 12mm cavity - 4mm inner pane) combined with acoustic-grade PVB laminates.
"By utilizing varying glass thickness profiles, we disrupt acoustic resonance patterns. This allows our double-glazed sliding frames to achieve Rw 42 noise control ratings, perfect for properties adjacent to high-decibel locations like the Pacific Highway corridor."

Extended Scientific Review & Materials Engineering Discussion
Materials science plays a crucial role in architectural aluminium engineering. For clear-anodized profiles, the oxide layer (Al2O3) is established using an electrochemical acid bath. The anodizing thickness (AA15 or AA25) establishes a barrier against marine salt corrosion. The AA25 marine-grade class specifies a 25-micron thickness, which is highly resistant to coastal weathering and chalking under salt spray environments.
For double-glazed joinery, thermal performance is evaluated using overall frame U-values and solar heat gain coefficients (SHGC). Our high-performance suites incorporate polyurethane thermal breaks crimped between the inner and outer aluminium profiles. This thermal barrier stops heat conduction through the frame, reducing cooling loads. When combined with double glazing (6mm Low-E outer - 12mm Argon cavity - 4mm inner), frame U-values are reduced to 1.85 W/m²·K, ensuring energy efficiency.
For electrostatic powder coating, the thermoset polymer must achieve complete cross-linking during baking. Our lab performs MEK solvent rub tests to verify that the coating is fully cured. By matching materials testing with localized QLD building regulations, our technical reviews provide builders and design professionals with verified structural specifications.
